Choreography & Direction by Paul Julius
Music Adolphe Adam
Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin · 2010
Giselle is a full-length reinterpretation of the classical ballet, created for the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin in 2010. Paul Julius approaches the familiar story through his own choreographic language, combining neoclassical forms with elements of contemporary dance while retaining the use of pointe work throughout the production.
Rather than focusing on a particular historical period or social background, the production places the relationships and emotional motivations of the characters at its centre. The role of Bathilde, Albrecht’s fiancée, is given greater prominence, while the traditional world of the Wilis in the second act receives a distinctive new interpretation.
